Net 30 accounts, and how they build a credit file
Net 30 is the most common first rung on the business credit ladder, and the one most often climbed with no result, because the supplier never filed anything.
What is a Net 30 account?
A Net 30 account is a trade credit arrangement where a supplier delivers goods or services now and gives you thirty days to pay. It builds business credit only if that supplier reports the account to a business credit bureau. Many suppliers offer Net 30 terms and report nothing, which builds no credit at all.
- Net 30 means payment is due thirty days from the invoice date.
- The credit benefit comes entirely from the supplier reporting the account, not from the terms themselves.
- Ask every supplier which bureaus they report to, by name, before opening the account.
- Paying early, not merely on time, is what improves the score once it is reported.
Why Net 30 is the usual starting point
A business with an empty credit file has a chicken-and-egg problem: lenders want to see a history, and history only comes from being extended credit. Net 30 supplier accounts break the loop because the amounts are small, the risk to the supplier is limited, and many will extend terms to a business with no file at all.
Open a few, use them for things you were going to buy anyway, and pay them early. That is the whole mechanism.
The question that decides whether it works
Ask the supplier: which business credit bureaus do you report to, and how often?
A supplier that reports will tell you straight away, because it is a reason to choose them. A vague answer ("we work with the major bureaus", "reporting may vary") is a no. This is the difference between an account that builds a file and an account that is merely a payment term.
It is worth being blunt about how often this goes wrong. A business can pay every invoice early for a year across four suppliers, none of whom report, and end that year with exactly the file it started with.
- Which bureaus do you report to, by name?
- How often do you report: monthly, or on some other cycle?
- How long after my first order does the account first appear?
- Do you report the account even if I always pay early?
Using them properly once they are open
Order regularly rather than once. A single order that was paid and never repeated tells a scoring model very little; a steady pattern of ordering and early payment tells it a lot.
Pay before the due date. Treating a Net 30 as a Net 20 costs ten days of float and is the cheapest score improvement available on either of the scales Ruproa reads.
Spread across a few suppliers rather than concentrating everything with one, so the file has more than one reference in it.
Finding suppliers
Ruproa maintains a directory of vendors and business services at /vendors, filterable by listing type and industry. It carries outbound affiliate links, which are disclosed on the page, and Ruproa does not operate any listed company.
Treat any directory, including this one, as a starting point rather than an authority: terms and reporting practices change, and the supplier's own answer to the reporting question is what counts.
Ruproa reports your payment activity to Creditsafe and Equifax Business every month, so the file you are watching is the file you are building.
Common questions.
Do all Net 30 accounts build business credit?
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the category. A Net 30 account builds credit only if the supplier reports it to a business credit bureau. Many offer the terms and report nothing, in which case the account gives you a cash-flow benefit and no credit benefit at all.
How many Net 30 accounts should I open?
Enough that the file has more than one reference in it (commonly three to five) and no more than you can genuinely use. Accounts you never order from report very little.
Do I need good credit to get Net 30 terms?
Often not. Many suppliers extend Net 30 to businesses with no credit file, which is exactly why it is the usual first step. Requirements vary by supplier.
Does Ruproa offer Net 30 terms?
