Business credit score ranges, side by side

There is no single business credit score. Each bureau runs its own model on its own scale, and a number is meaningless until you know which one it came from.

What are the business credit score ranges?

Business credit scores use a different scale at every bureau. The Creditsafe business credit score runs from 1 to 100. The Equifax OneScore for Commercial runs from 300 to 650. Because the ranges differ, the same figure can be strong at one bureau and weak at another. Always read a score against its own scale.

  • Creditsafe business credit score: 1 to 100, higher is better.
  • Equifax OneScore for Commercial: 300 to 650, higher is better.
  • There is no universal business credit score equivalent to a consumer FICO.
  • Two bureaus scoring the same business will usually disagree, because they hold different data.

Why the scales differ

Consumer credit converged on a small number of shared scales. Commercial credit never did. Each bureau built its own model against its own data, for its own subscribers, and there was never a regulatory push toward a common scale.

The practical consequence is that a business credit score without its bureau attached is not information. "My business credit score is 72" means something good on the Creditsafe scale and would be an impossible figure on the Equifax commercial scale.

The two scales Ruproa reads

The Creditsafe business credit score runs from 1 to 100 and predicts the likelihood of serious payment delinquency in the next twelve months. Higher is better. It is paired with a recommended credit limit, a currency figure suggesting how much credit it is prudent to extend.

The Equifax OneScore for Commercial runs from 300 to 650. Higher is better. Read it on that range: a 516 sits comfortably in the upper middle, and the same number read against a consumer 300 to 850 scale would look poor.

Scores this site does not quote

Two ranges circulate widely and are worth naming so you can discount them when you meet them here.

The D&B Paydex score runs 1 to 100 and is a Dun & Bradstreet product. It is a real score and a reasonable thing to care about; it is simply not something Ruproa reads or supplies. Ruproa is not affiliated with Dun & Bradstreet and does not issue DUNS numbers or Paydex scores. If you need those, you get them from D&B directly and for free.

The FICO SBSS is used in some lending decisions, notably around SBA loans. It is not part of the Ruproa product on any tier, so you will not find a figure for it in the dashboard.

What to do with the number

Treat a score as a summary, not a target. The lever is the file underneath it: reported trade references, paid before their due date, over time. A score improves as a consequence of that and cannot be moved directly.

If two bureaus disagree sharply about your business, that is worth investigating rather than averaging. It usually means one of them is missing data, or holding somebody else's.

Questions

Common questions.

What is a good business credit score?

It depends on the scale. On the Creditsafe 1 to 100 scale, higher is better and the recommended credit limit alongside it is often what a supplier acts on. On the Equifax OneScore for Commercial, the range is 300 to 650 and again higher is better. A number without its bureau attached cannot be judged.

Is there one universal business credit score?

No. Unlike consumer credit, commercial credit never converged on a shared scale. Each bureau runs its own model on its own range against its own data.

Why do my scores differ between bureaus?

Because the bureaus hold different data. A supplier that reports to one may not report to the other, so each file is a partial view. Sharp disagreement usually means missing records or a merge error worth disputing.

Does Ruproa show a Paydex score?

No. Paydex is a Dun & Bradstreet product and Ruproa is not affiliated with D&B. Ruproa reads Creditsafe and Equifax Business.
